Therapeutic Massage for Diagnosed Conditions  With Superbills for FSA, HSA & Insurance Reimbursement

Medical Massage Therapy in Los Angeles & West Hollywood | Artisan Bodyworx

Medical massage is an outcome-based therapeutic massage designed to treat diagnosed health conditions, chronic pain, sports injuries, musculoskeletal disorders, and post-surgical recovery. Unlike a spa massage, every session begins with a clinical assessment and ends with measurable results. At Artisan Bodyworx, I provide detailed superbills upon request, including my NPI number and CPT Code 97140, so you can submit for reimbursement independently through your FSA, HSA, or insurance provider.

What Is Medical Massage Therapy?

More than relaxation — massage with a clinical purpose.

Medical massage therapy is the skillful manipulation of the body's soft tissues muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments with the specific goal of treating a diagnosed health condition. Unlike a spa massage, which focuses primarily on relaxation, medical massage is outcome-based: each session centers on a specific clinical goal, guided by your health history, provider recommendations, and measurable results.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the goals of medical massage therapy include reducing pain, swelling, and muscle spasms, as well as improving range of motion and the ability to perform daily activities.

The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine notes that medical massage therapists provide care focused on healing injuries, improving function, and increasing circulation with advanced training that goes beyond general massage therapy.

At Artisan Bodyworx, every medical massage session begins with a clinical assessment of your condition, history, and goals and ends with documented results you can share with your healthcare provider.

Outcome-based care

Each session has a specific clinical goal, not a preset routine. Sessions adapt to your body, your condition, and your provider's recommendations.

Advanced massage training

Medical massage requires training above and beyond standard massage therapy — including soft tissue assessment, therapeutic techniques, and clinical documentation.

Collaborative care

Sessions follow your healthcare provider's recommendations and are documented with clinical notes and superbills for your records and reimbursement.

Medical Massage vs General Massage

Not all massages are the same.

Understanding the difference helps you choose the right care for your condition.

❌ Primary goal: relaxation and stress reduction

❌ No clinical assessment or treatment plan

❌ Preset routines — not condition-specific

Orthopedic Assessment in Massage Therapy

How It Works

01.

Get a Letter of Medical Necessity or referral from your provider.

Your physician, chiropractor, physical therapist, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant can provide this. It documents your diagnosis and supports FSA, HSA, or insurance reimbursement. Your provider assigns your diagnosis code,  not your massage therapist. A referral is recommended but not required to book.

02.

Book your session and bring your documentation.

Book online anytime via MassageBook, or contact me directly by text or email. Bring your Letter of Medical Necessity, referral, or any documentation from your healthcare provider to your first session. I'll conduct a clinical intake and build a treatment plan around your condition and goals.

03.

Receive your superbill and submit for reimbursement

I provide a detailed superbill after each session upon request, including my NPI number, CPT Code 97140, your session date, and the itemized cost. Please note: massage therapists cannot diagnose medical conditions or assign ICD-10 diagnosis codes. The diagnosis code on your superbill must come from your primary care provider or referring healthcare professional. I do not bill insurance directly  you submit the superbill independently.
